Adieu, freedom fries

Follow me on:

Three years ago, the U.S. decided to punish France for refusing to help with the invasion of Iraq by renaming French toast and French fries as "freedom toast" and "freedom fries," respectively. The great irony of course was that French fries are originally from Belgium and French toast's origins are far from certain. Some claim it was first made near Albany, New York by a man named Joseph French; others that it's included in a cookbook dating back to at least 1000 BC.

Today, the U.S. still wants France to help out in Iraq, and France still doesn't seem interested. What can we do? Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee has an interesting proposal: let freedom ring... right off the menu, so that French fries and French toast can return to their rightful place.
